Getting clients untangled from legal entanglements seems to be a preoccupation of Philip Tay, whose clients include some of the biggest names in O & G and Shipping.

A partner of the leading Admiralty and Shipping Team at Rajah & Tann LLP since 1998, Philip specialises in all International Shipping matters (charterparty, cargo, ship management, etc), International Trade and Commodities Trading and Shipment (Gas, Oil/Bunker, Steel, Coal), Insurance (Marine, P &I, Hull), ship building, repair, conversion, finance and mortgage enforcement.

Philip regularly represents MNCs, insurers, owners, charterers, cargo, power plant owners, traders, banks, logistics and freight clients in the UK, Japan, Singapore, Thailand, India, Hong Kong, Vietnam and China.  A former Philip C. Jessup International Law Mooter during his University days, Philip also regularly appears in Court and Arbitration Proceedings as Lead Counsel including in proceedings in the Singapore Court of Appeal.

Experience

Philip’s wealth of experience includes formal proceedings as in arbitrations governed by the ICC Rules, the UNCITRAL Rules, the SIAC Rules and the LMAA Rules as well as the more practical side of shipping and dispute such as getting clients' vessels out from detention / disputes with shipyards in places such as China and is frequently involved in shipbuilding disputes in the PRC acting for owners and yards alike.

Philip has also advised in various marine casualties involving collisions into port installations, fire or other incident occurring in shipyards advising yards, owners or their insurers on separate occasions, and is also a familiar face on the speaking circuit and is frequently invited to share views at seminars such as the Lexis Nexis Master Class on Shipbuilding Law and various International Arbitration Seminars.
